The co-occurrence of two or more disorders, such as depressive disorder with substance abuse disorder.
In psychiatry and psychology, comorbidity refers to the presence of more than one diagnosis occurring in an indvidiual at the same time. Conditions such as depression may be coupled with anxiety or insomia to create an intersectional mental condition. In order to properly care for an at risk individual expierencing comorbidity, health care providers must equally treat both conditions independently of one another. An individual expierencing comorbid conditions is at higher risk for self harm and suicide than those with only one condition.
